Luis Suarez is in talks with the Argentinian club River Plate over a free transfer this summer.

The Uruguay international has left Atletico Madrid after the end of his contract and is keen to stay in Europe ahead of the World Cup 2022 in Qatar later this year.

Many sides have reached out to Luis Suarez, and Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard is determined to bring the 35-year-old to Aston Villa, but 90 minutes later he was told River Plate was a favorite to sign.

River has applied to Suarez and is now hopeful of securing a deal this way, with the former Barcelona striker rejecting many promises from Europe to return to South America.

Luis Suarez scored his lowest goal of the La Liga season last year, netting just 11 goals in 35 games for Atletico. The lowest was 16, which he held in his first and final year with Barcelona.

With the Uruguayan tournament tense – Darwin Nunez, Edinson Cavani, Maxi Gomez, and Agustin Alvarez are all looking for a place in the World Cup – Luis Suarez is determined to play regular football to ensure he stays in the thoughts of manager Diego Alonso.

Luis Suarez has been left out of the Uruguayan team that has played in recent international matches, although the FA of that country has cited reasons why the striker is still looking for a new club as reasons for his absence.

Should the move to the River pass, Luis Suarez will replace the departing Julian Alvarez, who will join Manchester City this summer.

River will also lose young midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who moves to Benfica.
