Kylian Mbappe has revealed that he had talks with Liverpool during the consideration of his options, before deciding to re-sign with Paris Saint-Germain.
Mbappe, 23, is considered the most important player in world football and has been linked with a move away from France to join Real Madrid at the end of his contract at the end of the season.
He eventually left his favorite childhood club wanting to stay in his home country, signing a contract that will keep him in Paris until 2025.
Although many believed it was a real two-horse race between the Spanish and French giants, Mbappe revealed in an interview with Telefoot that he enjoyed the idea of going to Anfield.
“It was not just Real Madrid and PSG – I was in talks to join Jurgen Klopp in Liverpool,” he said.
In an interview with the Telegraph, he added his inspiration, and that Liverpool were not part of his final negotiations.
“I spoke to Liverpool because it is my mother’s favorite club – my mother loves Liverpool,” he said. “I do not know why, you have to ask him.
“A good team and [we] met them five years ago. While in Monaco I met them. A great team.
“We talked a little bit, but not much … of course, it was between Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain in the end.”
The striker also hinted at why he might have relinquished his desire to go to Madrid, saying leaving a free transfer with Paris Saint-Germain without a win did not sit well with him.
“Everyone knows I wanted to go to Real Madrid last year, and I think it was a good decision to leave last year,” he said. “But now it is different because I was a free agent.
“I was a free agent, and it was important to get back to my country. If I had left I would have left as an outstanding player, but something hurts.
“I don’t think my chapter is closed. Things were not over for me at PSG.
“I am French and I know I am important in the country, and if you are important you should not only think about football, but also your life.
“I will be in France after my career. I will leave here [PSG], I will be with my family, my friends.
“The only thing I can say is thank you to all the Real Madrid fans, as well as the team, for giving me all the love.
“It’s amazing because I was only there for one week when I was 14 [to train]. I told them good luck about the Champions League [final].”
