Cristiano Ronaldo has announced that Erik ten Hag should be given the time and freedom to rebuild Manchester United when the Dutchman takes over at Old Trafford.
Much is expected of new manager Ten Hag, who will replace interim manager Ralf Rangnick at the end of the season.
The Dutchman has been a top scorer in the Netherlands and Ajax and has blocked a fierce competition for United.
Reports say Mauricio Pochettino et Julen Lopetegui were also keen to join the Red Devils, but United rallied for Ten Hag.
Veteran striker Ronaldo looks set to become a key player once the new regime takes office, having scored 24 goals for United in his first season for the club.
The 37-year-old, who won the Premier League Player of the Year award in April, says Ten Hag should be given the authority to make any changes he deems fit.
All I know about him is that he has done an excellent job for Ajax, that he is an experienced coach, ”said Ronaldo. “But we have to give him time.
“Things have to change the way he wants to.
“I hope we will succeed, because, if you win, all of Manchester will be successful. I wish him the best.”
Five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo, quoted on United’s website, said the appointment should fill everyone in the team with confidence.
This season has not been very exciting for United, who missed out on the Champions League and finished without a major trophy in the fifth consecutive campaign.
Ten Hag, by contrast, is coming out of the championship winning season in the Dutch Eredivisie.
“We are excited and excited, not only as the players, but also the fans,” said Ronaldo about the arrival of the 52-year-old Ten Hag.
“I wish him well but we believe that next year we will win trophies.
