Just days after the United States booked their place at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the draw was made in Doha where they were pitted against England, Iran and one of Scotland, Wales or Ukraine.
Although there are no easy games in the World Cup, and the United States are still underdogs, so to speak, Gregg Berhalter’s side have found a good balance.
With the exception of England, which is one of the favorites to win the tournament, USMNT will love its chances of exiting the group stage.
An attractive bond is awaited between the US and Iran, in a game not only of interest at the football level, but also at the geopolitical level.
Off-field competition has a long history, and communication tensions between the two nations continue to exist.
The two are famous for meeting in the 1998 World Cup, in which Iran won 2-1 with goals from Hamid Estili and Mehdi Mahdavikia, although Brian McBride was comforted.
England and the US met at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, drawing 1-1 between the two teams, with Steven Gerrard and Clint Dempsey scoring goals.
Although England are fully expected to take first place in Qatar, the US has the right to dream of a team more open than the Gareth Southgate boys.
