Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has dismissed allegations that his side were lucky enough to win the Champions League quarter-final against Chelsea.
After a shockly two-goal deficit in the first leg and a draw at the Bernabeu, Chelsea were once again stunned by Rodrygo’s volley before Karim Benzema sent Real a header for extra time.
Chelsea were the best team in Madrid last night, and speaking after the game their former player Courtois accepted that.
“We were not lucky, but it is true that they were a better team,” he said. “We finally won the tie.”
Mason Mount, Antonio Rudiger, and Timo Werner gave Chelsea the lead with three goals before Real Madrid responded, and Rodrygo voted for Luka Modric’s amazing world to take the game into extra time.
Benzema then poetically decided the team as he scored the winning goal in the 96th minute leading Los Blancos to a 5-4 victory over the Blues in all competitions to secure a place in the Champions League semi-finals.
Real Madrid, 12 points adrift of La Liga, will now look forward to their semi-final rivals as Manchester City and Atletico Madrid prepare for their match on Wednesday night.
With the European Cup over, Chelsea will now return to the FA Cup as they face Crystal Palace in the semi-finals on Sunday before facing Arsenal at Stamford Bridge in the London derby in the Premier League on Wednesday.
