Rodrygo claims stunning comebacks ‘are things only Real Madrid are capable of doing’

Sevilla FC v Real Madrid CF - La Liga Santander

Rodrygo led a Real Madrid fightback for the second time in a matter of days before declaring only the LaLiga leaders were capable of such turnarounds.

Madrid ended the week off by beating Sevilla 3-2 at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan to a 15-point lead – although Barcelona will still play on Monday.

Los Blancos had scored two goals at half-time before Rodrygo responded in five minutes after a restart, followed by Nacho’s goals and Karim Benzema’s impressive comeback.

The result followed a 3-2 loss to Chelsea, who were big enough to defend the UEFA Champions League.

Madrid came out on top after a 3-0 thrashing of European champions but reunited, again with Rodrygo’s extra-time goal and Benzema’s header in a 5-4 victory.

Rodrygo has scored in consecutive games for the first time in his career in Madrid and he would not have done it at a better time.

The striker, who also helped Benzema win the Sevilla, said: “We are going in a wonderful way, we are always fighting to the end.

“We knew this was going to be a very tough game, but I was happy to get into the second half, score a goal and provide help for my team.

“We really need to value these three points because no one else has won here but we have them, with three points that brings us closer to our goal of winning LaLiga.

“The coach told us we played less because we had a hard time in the first half and they were better than us.

“These are the only things Real Madrid can do. I am proud to be part of this team and to participate in this comeback.”

It was the first time Madrid won LaLiga after trailing by two goals since beating Villarreal 3-2 in February 2017, but they have achieved results several times this season, earning the league 17 points by losing positions.

Sevilla entered the unbeaten home game in the league this season, and it was the first time they had lost at home in the competition after taking a break since they lost 4-2 at the hands of Barcelona in February 2019.

In fact, they have not lost a single point as they have been in the lead since the break since losing 2-1 to Athletic Bilbao in October 2020.

Not since September 2019 against Eibar, another 3-2 defeat, Sevilla gave up a chance to win two goals in the top flight.
