Barcelona’s president, Joan Laporta, is adamant that his club will take part in the European Super League, despite facing a crisis on the continent.

Laporta also discussed major issues surrounding the club, from the possible arrival of Erling Haaland, Ousmane Dembele’s contract and the return of Leo Messi.

“Go ahead,” Laporta said of the European Super League, in an interview with TVE.

“We are proposing this project with Florentino Perez, with whom I often speak. It is a way to save European football.

“We will not allow European football to be in the hands of non-European Union regions. It is clear that [Manchester] City and PSG have a money-making machine, and we are fighting against that.

“Not only are the three clubs I’m talking about, but some are quiet, but in the back they still support us.

Barcelona are in a position to strengthen their portfolio with a contract with CVC and Camp Nou naming rights from Spotify, but Laporta is wary of escaping by signing, either Erling Haaland or Leo Messi.

“I am very clear that I have put the institution above the players, coaches, directors and officials,” he said.

“We will not sign players who will change our salary policy. We want to improve the team rather than the individual. I will not disclose the names because that would increase their price and could hurt Barcelona.

“If Leo [Messi] wants to talk to me about returning to Barcelona, I would be happy.”

Laporta are still optimistic about Barcelona’s chances of winning the LaLiga Santander.

“I’m sure we can win it. Plus, we’ll win it!” he said.

“Simply put: in the final season of the season we are very strong, with a fully functional team, with a coach with clear ideas and who makes us play our real football.

“We have got our point and we have to go with hope and fight for LaLiga.

“It will not be easy, it is clearly a big challenge, but I believe it can happen.”
