Argentine stars Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria have both admitted they are considering resigning from international duty after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Both were targeted on Friday as Argentina, already ready for the tournament, beat Venezuela 3-0.

After the match, both players expressed their gratitude to the local fans and made no secret of the fact that this could be their last game in the country.

Starting with Messi, he said: “After the World Cup I have to rethink many things, depending on whether it goes well or bad, let’s hope it goes well.

“I’ve been happy here for a long time, since before I won the Copa America. People show me that they love me and I’m grateful. It’s all-natural, easy on and off the field.”

PSG teammate Di Maria then took to Instagram to release a statement that seemed clearer than Messi’s.

“I would like to thank you for the great love I have received. I have always dreamed of everything I saw on this beautiful night,” he said.

“Maybe it was my last game with this shirt in Argentina. And to say it was an amazing night is an understatement.

“Thank you, thank you and a thousand times thank you.”
