Hat-trick hero Lautaro Martinez: Inter’s character and determination have been revived

Inter have made themselves honey in their determination and character with a stunning 5-0 win over Salernitana, according to Lautaro Martinez.

A four-game unbeaten run in Serie A and two of seven wins in the tournament saw Inter emerge from the top spot and fall by two points behind Napoli leaders.

However, the Nerazzurri returned to the top on Friday after Martinez scored in a high-scoring match for the first time since December. It ended a goalless draw in 425 minutes, making it the worst in all competitions since he spent 430 minutes without a goal in January 2018.

The Argentine finished the match at the San Siro with a hat-trick, with teammate Edin Dzeko scoring two more as Inter advanced to the top of the table ahead of a meeting between Napoli and Milan on Sunday.

Martinez is delighted to see Simone Inzaghi’s team get back on track after starting the year lazily.

“There was no win and no goals for the team. Today we scored five and we are happy,” Martinez told Sky Sport Italia.

“I myself have had a difficult time because the striker lives to score goals, today I was lucky to score three goals.

“I came out of the stadium with a lot of passion and anger because it was an important game for us and an important time is approaching.

“We have to show a lot of things because we have lost our determination and morals.

“When I sleep, I talk a lot to my wife because I feel bad when I can’t help the team with goals. I have talked a lot with her, my friends and family. I give these three goals to my daughter.

“[Inzaghi] always gives me confidence. He fights us on the sidelines.”
