Wembley could host UEFA Champions League final due to Russia-Ukraine conflict

UCL FINAL 2021

Amid concerns about the ongoing situation between Russia and Ukraine, the outcome of the UEFA Champions League final could change.

The final match is currently scheduled to take place at the Gazprom Arena in Saint Petersburg, Russia, on May 28.

According to Marca, UEFA is expected to hold the finals elsewhere unless conditions improve.

Hosting the finals costs about 60 million pounds and there are all suggestions that London will be the venue for this event as well.

After hosting the delayed European 2020 tournament, including the finals, Wembley Stadium could be called up to host the match, which is considered one of the best in European football.

Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United are still in contention, and if two of these reach the finals, Wembley will be the site of one of the most important finals in less than 12 months.

The chairman of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, Julian Knight, has called on UEFA to take action now.

Wembley last hosted the Champions League final in 2013, when Bayern Munich beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1. Two years ago, the England national team stadium hosted the Champions League final between Barcelona and Manchester United.

It was an act that angered many fans who had to radically change plans to qualify for the finals after spending a lot of money buying original tickets and transportation.

As the situation between Russia and Ukraine is very unlikely to be resolved in the coming months, there is a sudden urgency imposed on UEFA not to repeat last-minute changes of last season and instead to keep fans in mind.
