Tottenham Hotspurs produced one of the shocks of the season as they stunned Premier League champions Manchester City to win 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium.
Harry Kane – who has been linked with a move to City in the summer – scored two goals and was sent off for another Saturday night game.
Spurs took the lead in the fourth minute when Kane slipped Son Heung-min in the back, while Ederson made rapid progress, the South Korean unselfishly found Dejan Kulusevski unleashing the City net.
Joao Cancelo came close to scoring an equalizer after facing the challenges of Kulusevski and Emerson Royal, but his bending strike went to the wrong side of the long post.
Next in line for Spurs’ goal was Ilkay Gundogan, who found the ball even though the ball was blocked under his feet when he fired.
Cancelo took another chance before Phil Foden’s shot was blocked by Ben Davies ‘shins, and a cross-cum-shot from Kevin De Bruyne fell into Hugo Lloris’ grateful arms.
Tottenham looked intimidating in the opposition, Harry Kane almost released Son and Emerson shot on the edge of the City box.
City scored the equalizer half an hour later when Lloris deflected the ball slightly, with Gundogan present batting the net.
Athletes continued to control the ball but Spur defended with determination, the next real opportunity came to Son after the break. The striker was also picked up at the counter by Kane, but after being puzzled by City defenders, he fired straight into Ederson’s arms.
And Tottenham once again took the lead an hour later when Son’s full-inch cross was turned into a high corner by Kane.
The Spurs were unlucky not to add a third just after that when Son found Kane again, but Ederson made a concerted effort to deny the England captain.
Lloris made amends for his previous mistake by making an extra stop to meet Gundogan’s effort from a distance, while Bernardo Silva was stopped for a clean sheet several times by Cristian Romero.
Kane had the ball in the net with 20 minutes left, but after a long VAR test, the goal was scored offside against Kulusevski during construction.
Encouraged by the decision, City re-approached Cancelo, forcing Lloris into another reserve.
As the suspension drew to a close, City filed a lawsuit against Romero, but the decision was overturned after a VAR test and the athletes had a way of life.
His replacement Riyad Mahrez came out on top as he looked to have scored a point.
But don’t believe it, the drama is not done there. Kulusevski’s high ball bounced off seven minutes of extra time and was met by the rising Kane, who headed straight into Ederson’s net to snatch the win.
