Manchester City have confirmed that defender Joao Cancelo has signed a new contract with the Etihad, which is committed to the club until 2027.
His previous contract was due to expire in 2025 but City were keen to offer the Portuguese player an improved contract as a reward for his impressive form, making him one of the top players in the Premier League.
Right-back Cancelo has excelled in both sides of City’s defense, scoring 3 goals and 8 assists for City so far this season.
“Manchester City are a very good team, so I am very happy to sign this new contract,” he said after signing his contract.
“The city players have everything they need to reach their full potential, they have amazing resources, world-class partners, and an amazing manager who pushes us every day. There is no better place to play football and it is fun to work here.
“There is a lot I want to achieve before the end of my career, and Manchester City gives me the best opportunity to achieve my ambitions.
“This new contract means that I am now more focused on improving my game and winning more trophies with the team.”
Soccer director Txiki Begiristain added: “Joao is top-notch. He absolutely loves football and uses it every day in an effort to improve.
“He sets very high standards, and any young player should look at how Joao uses them when he wants a success plan.
“Not only does he have incredible talent, but he also shows dedication to the game. That’s why he can play so many high-quality games. His consistency over the past two seasons has been amazing.
“You use a lot of stuff. Whether you play right back, left, or center, you work at the same level. That is a dream come true for a manager. I’m so glad you signed, and I can’t wait to see him improve in years to come. ”
