Lionel Messi wins Champions League Goal of the Group Stage award

Messi scored his maiden goal vs Man city

Lionel Messi’s attempt at Paris Saint-Germain against Manchester City was voted the UEFA Champions League goal of the Group stage.

The strike was the first goal for the 34-year-old at PSG after joining outside the club due to Barcelona’s financial problems that prevented them from offering him a new contract.

PSG were leading 1-0 after an eighth-minute opener by Idrissa Gueye when Messi, in the 74th minute, played well one-on-one with Kylian Mbappe on the edge of the box.

The Frenchman got back on Messi’s path before Argentina hit an unstoppable effort on the left foot in the top right corner past the helpless Ederson in the City goal.

Leo Messi received 22% of the vote – cast more than 200,00 – defeating Thiago Alcantara and Robert Lewandowski, who won 14 percent and 13 percent respectively.

Thiago hit a high point in Liverpool’s bottom right corner in their 2-0 win over Porto at Anfield, and Lewandowski fired a powerful kick into Bayern Munich’s 2-1 win over Dynamo Kiev.
