Leonardo: Sergio Ramos has caused surprises and tensions since joining PSG

Sergio Ramos

The Spaniard was far from the only player to join PSG, with goalkeepers Gianluigi Donnarumma, midfielders Georginio Wijnaldum and full-back Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes, and Lionel Messi among the newcomers.

His contract expired this summer with a saga drawn between the club and the player, as the long-running chess game played in the media Ramos refused to allow a one-year contract on reduced terms.

Sergio Ramos has played only 7 club games this year and only 2 games at home since January with each return bringing a new setback.

The Spaniard has signed a two-year contract with PSG after leaving Madrid and missing out on European competition and has had to spend an entire season as a frustrated spectator.

But Sergio Ramos’ departure did not go as far as planning, which PSG sporting director Leonardo has since admitted.

“We did not expect to stay without Ramos for four or five months,” Leonardo said in an interview with Europe 1, where he also discussed Kylian Mbappe and Mauricio Pochettino.

“We knew he was injured last season that we should have treated him, but it is true that something surprised us.

“There has been a tense situation, but we have prepared ourselves as much as possible and we have recovered. But now he is on the right track. It will be very important to have him in the second half of the season.”
