United States beat Mexico 2-0 at Cincinnati’s TQL Stadium in the Octagonal World Cup qualifier round. Christian Pulisic came in 69th place and knocked Timothy Weah in the 74th minute to make the USA the best. Weston McKennie completed the scoring in the 85th minute.
USMNT goalkeeper Zack Steffen made four saves to keep the sheet clean. Three points put the USMNT at the top of the Octagonal table, tied for points with Mexico but leading by a goal difference.
“Really, it was amazing,” Pulisic told ESPN. “The fans have made everything even better. They really went out at night. There was a lot of noise there. Times like these are just the beginning of our lives. ”
That was not all good news in the USA. Miles Robinson saw his second yellow in the 90th minute and was suspended for Tuesday’s game against Jamaica. The yellow card given to McKennie in the 68th minute means he has also been suspended from Jamaica for a collection of cards.
Elsewhere in the Concacaf World Cup qualifier, Panama came back from a goal down to win 3-2 in Honduras. Alberth Elis placed Honduras in 30th place and Brayan Moya doubled in 59th place. Cecelio Waterman started the Panama return in 77 and Cesar Yanis was equal in 80. Eric Davis scored Panama’s win in the 85th minute.
El Salvador and Jamaica left it too late in a 1-1 draw in San Salvador. Michael Antonio put Jamaica on top and Alex Roldan equalized in the 90th minute. Canada closed out Costa Rica 1-0 in Edmonton with a goal from Jonathan David in the 57th minute.
