Memphis Depay proves to be a ton of Barcelona fans in the first weeks of the season. The Dutchman has scored 7 goals in 2021/22, two of Barcelona’s, and 5 in 3 games for the Netherlands.
He turns out to be one of the summer negotiators, having arrived at the Camp Nou with a free transfer agent from Ligue 1 in Lyon at the request of Barca manager Ronald Koeman.
Memphis Depay is also showing that he replaces Barcelona star Leo Messi and looks set to be a new season totem for the Catalan club.
Memphis’ exploits have so far prompted Barcelona fans to compare his impact on the club with Ronaldinho, whose earlier display has shone at Camp Nou as if no other footballer had done so.
Many are thinking back to his bad breath at Manchester United between 2015 and 2017, but the Dutchman admits that the move was too fast in his career and that he felt pressure compared to former Reds veteran Cristiano Ronaldo.
But Memphis’ career was reborn in Lyon and he achieved his dream by moving to Barcelona, where Koeman – who was a world-class manager with the Netherlands – showed all faith in him.
No one thought it would be easy to fill the cave gap left by Messi, but Memphis took some steps to do so.
